HELLO,
MY NAME IS I AM – Sermon Outline
I.
INTRO
When you meet someone for the very
first time, what is one of the first things you might say to the person to
introduce yourself? Most people will say
something like, “Hey, my name is Tiffany”.
Then the new person will tell you their name.
Point
to name tag.
We’re all wearing name tags today,
so we don’t have to do all of that. But
most of us in here know each other anyway, don’t we? If I said, “{child’s name}, go give Amber a
high five”, you would go over to Amber {point to Amber} and give her a high
five, wouldn’t you? Even if she wasn’t wearing a nametag, most of you know
exactly who Amber is, don’t you? Nametags
help a lot with strangers, but with people we know, they really aren’t
necessary. Especially with family
members. If someone says, your Dad or
your Mom you know exactly who they are talking about. And if your parents are anything like mine,
anytime someone said, “your mom said” or “your dad said”, you better get busy
doing whatever they said to do.
When we were growing up, if my
sister came in my room and said, “you gotta take out the garbage”, I would
probably just ignore her and keep doing whatever I was doing before. But if she said, “MOM SAID it’s your turn to
take out the garbage.” I would jump and
take out the garbage right then! When
our parents tell us something, we believe it, don’t we? Whether it’s to do a chore like taking out
the garbage or something fun like, “this summer we’re going to Disney World on
vacation.” If my sister had told me that
when we we’re little, I would have probably said, “SAYS WHO?” And if she said
“Mom!” I would know we were going to
Disney World for real!
II.
WHO WAS
Sometimes your parents or teachers
send a sibling or another student to tell you something important, don’t
they? Maybe it’s something fun like,
“get ready we’re going to the toy store!” or even if it’s something not so fun,
like “{child’s name} it’s your turn to clean the poop out of the hamster
cage”. When it’s something our parents
or teachers really want us to do, they usually tell the person, “tell {child’s
name} that I said so!”
Sometimes, God also has important
things to tell us. Sometimes He tells us
directly. Sometimes, He sends someone
else to tell us. Part of today’s Bible
story deals with this exactly. We’re
going to get a little Old Testament this morning. God needed Moses to tell the Israelites
something very important. At the time,
the Israelites were slaves in Egypt. The
Egyptians were very mean to them. They
made them work hard and beat them if they started getting tired and didn’t meet
their quota. God had heard the cries and
prayers of Israelites, just like he hears our cries and prayers when we are
upset, and was sending Moses to help lead the Israelites out of Egypt into a
better land that He had waiting for them.
Moses didn’t think the Israelites would believe God had sent him as a
messenger and leader. In Exodus Chapter
3, Moses says, “Suppose I go to the People of Israel and I tell them, “The God
of your fathers sent me to you’, and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ ‘ What do
I TELL them?” God said, “I AM WHO I AM.
Tell the People of Israel, ‘I AM sent me to you’. God knew when Moses went before the
Israelites and said, “hey, God knows you’re suffering and he’s going to free
you all from this slavery.” The people
would be leary. Just like I asked my
sister “says who?” when I wasn’t sure if she was just making something up or if
my mom had in fact told her to tell me something. So God told Moses, “TELL THEM I AM SENT YOU!” Israel would know Moses really had a message
from God when he said “I AM SENT ME.”
We call God a lot of different
names. Sometimes we say God. Sometimes we say Jesus. Sometimes we say Father. Some people call Him Jehovah. Some people call Him Lord. Did any of you know God’s name is also “I
AM”? When you talk to God, you can also
call Him, I AM.
III.
WHO IS
God didn’t just call Himself “I AM” in the Old Testament.
During Jesus’ ministry, a lot of
people believed He was the son of God, but some people didn’t believe Him at
all. No matter how many blind eyes He
healed. No matter how many deaf ears He
opened. Even when He raised Lazarus from
the dead, some people just wouldn’t believe in Jesus. One day, some of the people who didn’t
believe Jesus was the son of God, were calling Him crazy and
demon-possessed. Can you imagine someone
calling Jesus crazy and demon-possessed to His face???? When Jesus said, “if you do what I tell you,
you’ll never have to face death”, the non-believers were very mad! They couldn’t believe He thought He was
better than the prophets! They couldn’t
believe He thought He was better than Abraham!
Jesus looked them in the eye and said, “I am who I am long before
Abraham was anything.” I AM WHO I AM…
God said that to Moses, too! God’s name
is I AM and Jesus’ name is I AM because Jesus is the same and equal to God.
IV.
WHO IS TO COME
In our power verse from Revelation,
Jesus says, “I am the Alpha and Omega who is, and who was, and who is to
come.” This means that the same God
who sent Moses to rescue the Israelites, the same Jesus who came and died for
our sins and was resurrected and now sits at the right hand of God the Father,
will be coming back one day. It could be
in a thousand more years, it could be tomorrow, it could be today, it could be
any minute. He promised He would come
back for us. And as long as we have
asked Him to forgive and wash away our sins and to be our God, we get to go to
Heaven with Him forever. If Jesus were
to come back right this minute, would you be going to Heaven with Him? If you’re not sure, we don’t want you to
leave here this morning without knowing
100% that when Jesus comes to take everyone who loves Him, has repented
of their sins, and has asked Him to be their God—their Lord and Savior—to
Heaven, that you’ll be going to Heaven
with Him. We pray this prayer every
Sunday in Kids’ Church and we’re going to pray it again this Sunday. Whether it’s the first time or the hundredth time,
Jesus doesn’t mind at all. As long as
you really, really mean it deep down in your heart, Jesus will come and wash
away all the mistakes, He’ll wash away all those things you shouldn’t have
done.
